The Life and Times of Charles Freer Andrews
Charles Freer Andrews was born in 1871 and died on this day in 1940. He worked as a missionary for the Christian Student Union before becoming involved in social causes. In 1914, he traveled to South Africa to argue for Indian workers' rights there. It was there that he met Mahatma Gandhi who would become close friends with him. On his return to England after WWII, Charlie moved back to Cambridge where he taught but also helped transform public opinion in Britain in favor of Indian independence.
