Mural art during this period, during the mid 19 thirties, was actually kind of hot on the programme. In fact, this programe here was directly inspired by the mexican mural scene,. The government paid artists to decorate public walls there in mexico. But they also had the potential to be controversial. For instance, just a few years earlier, over at that big construction site in midtown that would become rockefeller’s centre, there was a mural by diego rivera which caused a total uproar and was destroyed.
