James Robert Oppenheimer was a physicist and philosopher. He oversaw operations at the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos, New Mexico, location. After atomic bombs were deployed against civilian cities in Japan, he grew deeply critical of the bomb he had helped create. His ties to the United States Communist Party are well documented.
