Early in the COVID pandemic, as we figured out how to live our lives solely at home, news stories began to be filled with stories about COVID’s spread and reproduction rates. Soon, social media were filled with amateur epidemiologists trying to make sense of those rates and sometimes making a mess of it. Gavin Freeguard is a freelance consultant focused on among other things, data, information, and policy. He formerly worked at the Institute for Government in the UK, where he served for a time as the programme director, head of data and transparency. Years ago, Freeguard was the deputy director of The Orwell Prize, which recognizes the best of British political writing. He authored a 5-part series in Significance about reproduction rates and COVID.
