The idea of the professor type fits a certain literary trope that perhaps is passed down and reinforces that image which is possibly not quite true as the war moves on. The women who are actually doing code breaking jobs aren't described as code breakers they're described as clerical staff or translators. Joan Clark, briefly engaged to Alan Turing was asked to apply for a post as a linguist and so there's her application form said post applied for linguist and then the next question was language skills and she put none but you know what? So they found ways this is quite quite good because they found ways around the problem but of course to people looking at the paper records 75 80 years
