The free spirit, on the other hand, as Nietzsche sees him, sees this as an inversion of the truth. That progress is the deliverance from the unjust social arrangements that were artificially imposed on mankind by society. This was the Greek Apollinian perception that they had to overthrow titans and slay monsters in order to establish the polis. What the utilitarian modern person does is pursue the ending of all suffering. But he brings forth his even more terrifying challenge to this idea in the following lines.
