After 9-11, people who'd been in my mind having a really great time were now claiming to be military pundits. And it was driving my rage through the roof. So we tried to come up with Gary Bretcher as a character to embody that resentment. But some of the stuff they came up with was astonishing, even by the hysterical standards that prevailed in America after 9-11.
