He was sceptical of progress even as a young graduate student in his rearly twenties. His parents had been so influenced by, the hope that through rational inquiry ands means, we could construct this ideal society. So he just doesn't think there's something fundamentally flawed at its foundation with this kind of liberal optimism. He would want to honor family and fidelity to family - unlike libertarian forms of community.
