Do You Admit the Offence, or Do You Want a Lower Penalty?

Sentencing Council for England promotes consistency in sentencing. One of those guidelines offers defendants who plead guilty at the earliest opportunity, one-third off any prison sentence they may receive. A guilty plea might also reduce a prison sentence to community service or a community sentence to a fine. But doesn't that guideline put defendants under pressure? I asked Lord Justice William Davis, chair of the Sentencing Council.
