What Is Lacking in Christ's Afflictions?

Paul says, I complete what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. What could Paul possibly be referring to relative to expiration of sin? That is, discharging the debt of temporal punishment. But notice how Paul says he's not offering up his suffering for a particular individual, but for the church,. He's ordering the satisfactory value of his suffering to the whole of the church.
