The American Civil War was to that point the worst civil war in human history simply in terms of its cost in human life it made the English Civil War look like a lightweight event tokfield didn't see it but by the time he died in 1859 it was pretty clear to him that America was on a dangerous path. He had some of that sense of democracy as the providential system of government the one that God had ordained for human beings because its underlying principle was the one he thought would win out even in Europe.
