As you peel off from the monolith, treat it as a third-party service. And that's probably hard to do within a lot of organizations because that's forcing a culture change within the organization. Culture is the most important thing, ultimately, within an organization and technical teams. But without that, I don't think it's possible to get anywhere with microservices.
