Borg or Restik need a file system mounted to do backups. Jim rightly said that not everyone is using ZFS and should use R snapshot in such a case. The one advantage of an R snapshot style backup is that it can be read without any additional steps or tools. Given the similar effort for the setup and major drawbacks, I wouldn't recommend the R snapshot backup technique in 2022.
