Scherberg uses instruments brahms never would have dreamed of getting near. In the quartet sion, brahms writes a cadenza solo for the piano that reminds you of a romani violinist or clarinetist being accompanied by a dulcimer. Here's one place where i think schernberg might have outdone brahms. Listen to the clarionet imitating the piano runs while the strings and winds do an incredible imitation of that dulcimer.
