Is There a Ratchet in Standards in a Field?
There's definitely this, I think, really interesting thing about a field's collective standards. It was really striking to realize that the papers from the earlier 20th century had much lower standards than papers from later on. The sciences tend to start that way and then as they gradually develop better heuristic principles, better theories, you know, hopefully the standards start to rise.
