The Standard Model of Physics May Not Be Good Enough
We now know of 57 different elementary particles, a whole particle zoo. The standard model allows us to categorize them but it doesn't explain why they exist. Einstein's theory of relativity comes to our aid once again in helping us to measure the muon. Cosmic ray muons which are hitting us are traveling close to the speed of light so their internal clocks go slower due to relativity and so they live longer.
