The Importance of Jonathan's Childhood
Baran was brought up in poverty by his widowed mother, and a very strict Calvinist nurse. He had a club foot, and he was acutely conscious of that. The absent father obviously is very important as well, and possibly the fact that he was sexually abused by his nurse. We also know that we're told that his mother's family was one of the most violent farmers in Scotland. So there's quite a mix going on there.
