Is the Second Amendment Protecting the Right of Private Citizens to Own Guns?
Until the case of columbia versus heller, there wasn't any confusion about what the second amendment did or didn't do. I think constitutional scholarship from that period of time makes it pretty clear that our founding fathers did likely believe that there was a common right for individuals to own weapons. But they also believed that that right should be heavily regulated. So my argument here is that as as progressives who want to make progress, it's probably best for us to acknowledge that we don't think the constitution allows for us to take away guns but we do think the constitution allow for us to have common sense regulations on gun ownership.
