The Reputation of the Pinto
The pinto was designed to have a rear mounted fuel tank. It sat nestled between the car's rear axle, and the rear bumper. Fuel tank location meant that if someone driving a pinto were to get rear ended by another car, there was a very real possibility that the fuel tank would be damaged or ruptured. There were cases of collisions in which people badly injured or even dyed from burns. Still, this was bad enough for the pinto to show up on a lot of these worst car lists.
