Measures of Democracy, Right?
There are different components of democracy. One is electoral democracy, that's what I've been really focused on. And then there are separate components like liberal democracy, right? So the idea that people have civil liberties and egalitarianism from Latin American Europe. But you've seen tremendous divergence between democratic and republican controlled states on electoral democracy over the past 20 years. If you consider things like policing authoritarianism or reproductive rights for women, when you think about other sort of civil rights and liberties in that way, you've actually seen less divergence. The US has a larger prison population. This is very bad for its sort of liberal democracy component. That may be changing as a result of the Black Lives Matter
