The Cost of a Healthy Food Basket
A 2019 study by the Northern Territory government found that the cost of a quote, healthy food basket to feed a family of six for two weeks was 56% higher in remote communities than in metropolitan centres. These communities include some of Australia's lower socio-economic groups and yet they are paying up to one and a half times the average amount for food. Raising JobSeeker and other welfare payments to a liveable level would ultimately cost some $200 billion according to Guardian Australia's interactive budgetary tool.
