CHAPTER

Essence and Existence

Every individual substance can exist or not exist. This is the most radical form of being in potentiality and being in act we can consider. Things come into being through generative change, then cease existing when they undergo substantial corruption. The existence of the human being does not belong to it by essence, or simply due to the principles of form and matter. We come to be through the causal activity of other realities. What each of us is essentially a human being doesn't account ultimately for why each of us exists. Not ultimately, not totally.
