What's the Context of Eric Garner's Death?

The murder of Michael Brown comes just a few weeks after Eric Garner is killed. The New York Times op-ed from Tom Cotton calling for more force in the street didn't go over well and kind of summoned this huge media reckoning. There was also seared in my memory, black reporters in Pittsburgh, which they couldn't cover the protests because of their assumed biases. I believe there's like another similar incident at the Philadelphia Inquirer where they published something they absolutely shouldn't have.
