A Brief History of Augustine's Autobiography

In his confessions, Augustine says that some truths are more equal than others. Detailed knowledge of astronomy for instance is to be avoided because it doesn't help us understand Scripture and might also lead us along the wicked paths of astrology. He mentions the Platonists in particular as having provided material worth common during for use in Christian teaching. In keeping with the interpretive theory of on Christian doctrine, here in the Confessions he is open to the possibility that other interpretations may be possible. So long as the message that emerges from an interpretation is true, mission accomplished.
