Is It a Performance Thing?

Slices are a projection of the original. You just like directly add whatever the index is to the original pointer and it gives you exactly the address. So I've never heard of slices working that way in any language. Swift doesn't think of it that way at all. It very much is tied to the abstract collection interface.
