Is My Encyclopaedia Still There?

Science fiction writer stephen hawking came up with an analogy. He put his encyclopaedia in a sealed box where nothing can leave. You heat the box up to fahrenheit four 51, and whatever combusts is left behind. But we don't know how properties of what fell in are retained. We also no longer know how to recover that information.
