Scadula is the greek version of a four letter english curse word beginning with s. The woman's first marriage was to a greek man, and they had lived together for years in athens. He never called her by her first name; he led her as my little scadola. So she lived that way for years, hugely painful, completely dehumanizing. For this woman, repeated abuse in her most intimate rela ship had shaped her so deeply that it was even beneath her logical processing. She remarried to a loving and attentive husband but still has her guard up.
