What's Lewis Poking Fun At?

Eustace's parents are vegetarians, non smokers and teetotalers. He says that eustace is far too stupid to make anything up himself. Why does louis prize imagination? I think what lewis is doing here is poking fun at people who simply go with the latest cultural trend. And he's trying to do to us is to create a sense of deep sympathy for eustace.
