The Importance of the Dollar

I'm buying my girl friend an engagement ring soon. I feel like giving her something fancy will stress the importance of luxury, and that's not how i want to start our lives together. If i tied a string around her finger, that should be enough. It's a symbol, not a collector's item. How do i convey this to her? Also, please, don't act like a chick, and tell me how and why it's important to her. This is the biggest day of her focking young life.
