The author lost her mother at a young age. She says she had to grow up fairly quickly, become very independent and rely mostly on herself. But when i start losing my vision, i had to depend on people more - even for the most mundane of tasks. So in a way, i really wasn't prepared for that, because losing my mob did make me independent, and then losing my vision made me learn to be dependent again.
Christine Ha fell in love with cooking in college when she tried to recreate the Vietnamese dishes her mother had cooked for her as a child. But when a rare neurological condition left Christine legally blind by age 24, she worried she might never be able to cook again.
