Darwin was there and apparently he knew about the story because he wrote briefly about it in his journal. The remaining men were getting nervous about their situation. According to Courtney, a new escape plan was afoot and Barker was again at the center of it. He had overseen the building of a very sturdy and amminently seaworthy whale boat. They would take the boat downriver to the harbour and slip away unseen on the following Sunday night.
