There was always in, from even like before the days of the Constitution, I think there was this strong sense in a foundational American life that there was going to be kind of the machinery of politics and then religious morality. And you were sort of free to admit in some sense that politicians were the scum of the earth. Like they were all these kind of grifters and con men or generally anybody that would want office was the last person you would want to put into office.
