How to Use a D20 Roll to Improve Your Persuasion Skills
The d20 can be used to grade on a curve instead of saying there is a flat dc that you need to hit. You could also just have them roll the d20 and narrate based on how high or low they rolled. I actually wrote an article about this back in 2016 called 1d20 shades of gray. It talks specifically about using like the dungeon world idea that you can grade on a Curve.
