Is There a Homogeneous Vulgar Latin?
There were regional varieties of latin, but they were more what we'd think of as accents than genuine divergent dialects. So there wasn't a proto spanish and a proto italian and a proto french running around the towns of iberia, italy and gaul during the roman period. But there also wasn't a homogeneous vulgar latin that was exactly the same in rome, london, carthage and medidah.
