Is There a Maternity Leave Law in India?
Maternity leave law in India is a 'bazarre' - something to be proud of. But it doesn't apply to most women, who work until the day their baby is born. The law raises costs and encourages firms to hire men instead of women when there are equivalent candidates. It's another example of virtue signalling by elite policy makers says Ravi Agrawal. She argues that government needs to prioritize issues like maternity leave for its own good.
