EP 22 : Moon Landings and Mythology
Pathways with Joseph Campbell
00:00
Introduction
Joseph Campbell was inspired to revisit his thoughts on the functions of myth by what was at the time the success of the US space program in landing human beings on the surface of the moon. The moon missions made Campbell exceedingly aware that this conjunction of scientific theory and personally observed phenomenon is ultimately the field in which myth must operate. From 238,900 miles away, one sees no political boundaries, no lines are drawn on its face. It isn't the totality of existence and is possessed of no infinite, exhaustible span. from the moon, earth looks small, surrounded by darkness, alone, and fragile.
