i think it's useful to dig into the second part of his question first, but e equals m c squared. It's certainly true that mass contains a lot of energy. So take a little bit of mass and you multiply by a big number squared to get how much energy is stored inside that mass. And we know that, for example, because you can make like a huge bomb with a tiny, little bit of fuel by getting that energy out of mass. That's how nuclear weapons work.
