This is now the longest running period of very close electoral competition in American history. One theory is that there's just fundamental cultural economic, perhaps demographic forces which has split the country on a knife's edge. The other theory is that actually there is a huge amount of space of people who are deeply disaffected of both political parties.

Ed Luce is the US national editor and columnist at the Financial Times. He is also a member of the Persuasion board of advisors.
