How Important Is It That People Are Motivated to Do Research?

People are willing to make their decisions about what to work on based on importance, rather than slavishly following career incentives. In practice, unsurprisingly, it does tend to be people who are intrinsically motivated who mostly fit this profile. One trait that often leads people to fit this profile is if people find that the thing they find motivating and satisfying is having a relatively quick turnover of projects or objectives achieved. So i know of several people who have decided against a research career may be part way through their ph d, because they find, for one reason or another, they don't enjoy that kind of work. And even if they could make themselves do it, they just wouldn't be happy doing that
