I think evangelicals or former evangelicals I meet often have that cognitive dissonance, and maybe it's suppressed a lot. So there are some strains in the prophetic tradition where God does kill everybody else who is left standing alone. But Paul wants to be reconciled to all of humanity, that actually God wants that. And then other Jews like Paul can't buy into that because they don't want to be a member of an exclusive club.
