The Maypole or Church Ale Is an Interesting One
On May the 5th, 1643, this pronouncement came forth from parliament. It is this day ordered by the lords and commons in parliament that the book concerning the enjoining and tolerating of sports be burned. And all persons who have any of the said books in their hands are hereby required forthwith to deliver them to one of the sheriffs of London to be burnt according to this order. Now this is all background for what goes on when the confession of faith speaks about recreations. It is focused specifically upon this commandment that comes down from the king and the bishops to violate consciences.
