The Beauty of the Shire in the Lord of the Rings
The Shire is not an awesome place in chapter one. There's some deep problems in the Shire that are both driving Bilbo crazy, but also to which Bilbo is contributing. And it was really born home to me when I've been writing my way through chapter one that the beauty of the Shire gets developed over the course of the Lord of the Rings. By the time we finish, we do have the Shire of most people's imaginations, but we don't start there and looking at the way in which Tolkien sets up that journey.
