The Athenians and the Delian League
The cities of Boetia, Focus, and Locress were not officially incorporated into the Delian League however. They were forced to become allies of Athens, only owing them military service rather than foros or ships. The Athenians established democracies and expelled oligarchic factions in these cities to ensure their loyalty. In 457 BC they also decided to detach the sanctuary of Delphi from the amphiectonic league and handed it over to the Focians once again. It was at this point too that the Athenians concluded the building of the long walls, connecting Athens with Pyreus and Faluron - a distance of 8 miles.
