The Importance of Context in Interpretation

How a sentence or saying is to be interpreted depends crucially upon the context in which it appears. The evangelists exercise considerable editorial freedom in giving back the teachings and sayings of Jesus. When they are in these different contexts, they can seem to take on different meaning. I want to suggest that these passages about the Second Coming of Christ could be attributed to this contextual ambiguity.
