Athens and the Plage
Plague strikes at heart of several key traditions that the ancient Athenians considered central to their way of living. When does Pericles die, is that it right at the start of a strategy or is it nearer the end? The Spartans decide very sensibly not to attack at this point. They don't want to be anywhere near this plague city. And so they effectively call an end to their attacks on Athens and retreat back.
