Google's Bread and Butter Is at Risk From an Innovation to Search

Google has been playing with AI for a long time, but it feels like Google's bread and butter is at risk from some innovation to search. Are we too, are we beyond the era where we can do this kind of basic research? Is it hopeless for us? Should you and I start one of these things ourselves? It's always a mystery why this doesn't work out.
