There's been well-being research since Ed Deener invented that area back around 1980. What happened in the late 1990s was that, and a little, I probably shouldn't say this, but there's a little bit of a marketing thing, in my opinion. It didn't stand out because it wasn't really trying to be rigorously scientific. And so that's really what it was about: importing into mainstream research psychology some of these less considered ideas about how things go right with people instead of how they go wrong with people.
