The Book of First John Is a Shadow Reading
The book of first john lacks certain features that we might usually associate with an epistle. It was most like written by john, the brother of james and the author of the gospel and of revelation. When reading such a work, as we do not have intact writings of the people to whom john is responding, we have to engage in a sort of shadow reading. We must try to deduce the arguments of john's opponents, inferring deposition from john's arguments against them.
