Dostoevsky was struggling with financial problems and had to write in order to pay for his bills. He wanted to develop the ideas that he already developed in Raskolnikov, which was the original name for crime and punishment. In order to understand demons, a very good complementary read to that would be crime and punishment,. or retrospectively read crime and punishment, and then use that to understand more about demons.
