Evolutionary Algorithms and the Importance of Divergence

The main thing that current genetic algorithms do not have is divergence. They maintain a separate population of individuals, then they do crossover and random mutation. We introduced new kinds of mutation operators that actually are gradient-informed mutation operators. It's kind of mixing paradigms in a way to make the point that when we criticize evolutionary algorithms, because like say it's just random or something like that, it's kind of a myopic view.
